Major in Accounting

If you enjoy working with numbers, solving problems, analyzing data, and making important business decisions, an Accounting degree can open the door to a wide range of high-demand career opportunities. Often called the "language of business," accounting provides the financial knowledge and analytical skills organizations rely on to make strategic decisions, manage resources, and achieve long-term success.

The Idaho State University Accounting program prepares students for careers in public accounting, corporate finance, auditing, taxation, forensic accounting, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Students develop expertise in financial reporting, data analysis, business strategy, and regulatory compliance while gaining the critical thinking and leadership skills employers seek.

Whether you want to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), financial analyst, auditor, tax professional, forensic accountant, or business leader, an accounting degree provides a strong foundation for career growth and advancement. Accounting professionals are needed in nearly every industry, making it one of the most versatile and stable business degrees available.

Idaho State University's Accounting program is recognized among the top accounting programs in the nation and provides a direct pathway to the university's Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program for students seeking advanced credentials and CPA preparation. The program is also part of an elite group of institutions worldwide that hold both business and accounting accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Fewer than 200 business schools globally hold this dual accreditation, reflecting a commitment to excellence in accounting education and student success.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Accounting students gain real-world tax preparation experience through the VITA program, a nationally recognized initiative that provides free tax preparation services to qualifying individuals and families. Working directly with clients, students apply classroom knowledge to prepare tax returns, develop professional communication skills, and gain hands-on experience with tax laws and filing procedures.

The Idaho State University College of Business VITA program consistently ranks among the most productive programs at peer institutions, filing more than 400 tax returns during a typical two-month tax season. Participation in VITA helps students build practical accounting experience, strengthen their resumes, and prepare for careers in tax, auditing, public accounting, and financial services.
